Let’s be real: over-packing is practically a rite of passage for new travelers. But once you’ve lugged a giant suitcase up a cobblestone street or tried to jam it into an overhead bin mid-boarding panic… you realize: less really is more. If you’re ready to embrace light travel (and still look cute doing it), I’ve got you. Having traveled Spirit the last few times I’ve traveled, I’ve become a bit of an expert. In this guide, I’ll cover my top packing tips for light travel so you can become an expert too!

Whether you’re flying out for a weekend getaway, a business trip, or a week long Disney vacation, these packing tips will help you travel lighter, smarter, and a whole lot happier.

Start With the Right Bag

The foundation of light travel is your bag. A carry-on roller or backpack that meets airline size limits keeps you honest. Look for one with multiple compartments. Bonus if it has compression straps to help squeeze everything in.

Traveling Spirit and only want to bring a personal item? I highly recommend this backpack! I managed to snag it on sale and love it!

Pro tip: Try to pack everything in a carry-on. You’ll save time, money, and skip the baggage carousel entirely.

Plan Your Outfits, Don’t Pack Options

Instead of tossing in five shirts “just in case,” plan daily outfits based on your itinerary. Stick to neutral tones that mix and match easily, and add 1-2 fun accessories to change up the look. This is easily the toughest part for me, but several weekend trips later, I’ve gotten much better at it.

Capsule wardrobes aren’t just Pinterest-worthy, they’re practical.

Use Packing Cubes (Yes, They Work!)

Packing cubes aren’t just trendy, they’re game-changers. They help you stay organized, compress your clothes, and make unpacking at your hotel a breeze.

I use one cube for tops, one for bottoms, and a smaller one for underwear and socks. That’s it.

Minimize Toiletries

If you’re not checking a bag, stick to travel-sized liquids under 3.4 oz. Better yet? Use solid products: think shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and solid perfume.

Most hotels offer the basics, so don’t over-pack what you won’t use.

Roll, Don’t Fold

The best tip I ever received!! Rolling your clothes not only saves space but also keeps them from wrinkling. Stack heavier items at the base of your bag and work your way up with lighter pieces.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items

If you’re bringing boots, a chunky sweater, or a jacket, wear them while traveling. This frees up tons of space in your bag and keeps you warm on chilly flights.

Stick to a One-Shoe Rule

Okay, maybe two. But shoes take up the most space. Choose a versatile pair you can walk in, and something a little dressier if needed.

Leave Room for Souvenirs

You will buy something, whether it’s a magnet, a new pair of ears at Disney, or a handmade goodie from a local market. Leave 10–20% of your bag empty so you don’t have to play suitcase Tetris before flying home.

Make a Packing List and Stick to It

Before you start packing, write down what you actually need. You’ll be less likely to throw in those “just in case” extras that never get used.

Remember: You Can Always Buy It There

Unless you’re traveling off-grid, most destinations have a Target or convenience store. Forgot your toothbrush? It’s not the end of the world.

Packing light doesn’t mean going without; it means being intentional. You’ll spend less time dragging bags, worrying about outfit changes, or paying baggage fees. And honestly? It makes room (literally and mentally) for the real fun of travel.

So the next time you’re tempted to bring 4 pairs of jeans… maybe bring 1. Your back, and your future self, will thank you.
